“Due Date” is a comedy road-trip film that follows Peter Highman, an anxious and overly controlling architect who is desperately trying to get home to Los Angeles in time for the birth of his first child. After a series of unfortunate events at the airport, he is placed on the no-fly list and left with no choice but to travel across the country by car. His unwanted companion on this chaotic journey is Ethan Tremblay, an eccentric, clueless aspiring actor whose unpredictable behavior quickly turns the trip into a disaster.
From the very beginning, Peter realizes that traveling with Ethan will be anything but easy. Ethan’s strange habits, constant chatter, and lack of boundaries push Peter’s patience to the limit. At the same time, Ethan carries around a coffee can containing his father’s ashes, insisting that he plans to scatter them at the Grand Canyon. This mix of sincerity and oddness creates moments that are both awkward and surprisingly heartfelt, though Peter mostly finds himself overwhelmed and stressed.

As the two men drive through several states, their journey becomes increasingly chaotic. They are kicked out of a car rental, get into trouble with the police, and even find themselves stranded in the desert with no money and no transportation. Ethan’s poor decision-making constantly jeopardizes their progress, while Peter’s temper and frustration make every argument worse. Despite the tension between them, both are forced to rely on each other to keep moving forward.
Throughout the trip, Peter slowly begins to see that Ethan, beneath all his eccentricities, is lonely and genuinely wants a connection. Ethan, in turn, admires Peter’s determination and strong sense of responsibility, though he rarely shows it in a conventional way. Their developing bond becomes one of the film’s core elements, balancing humor with emotional depth.

The closer they get to Los Angeles, the more intense and desperate their journey becomes. They encounter more obstacles, including misunderstandings, injuries, and escalating conflicts. Yet every setback seems to push them toward a better understanding of themselves and each other. Peter realizes that he must let go of some of his rigid control, while Ethan begins to recognize the consequences of his behavior.
In the end, the chaotic adventure brings them to the hospital just in time for the birth of Peter’s baby. Despite all the trouble and frustration, Peter acknowledges that Ethan played an unexpected role in helping him get home. “Due Date” blends humor, chaos, and heartfelt moments into a story about how two completely mismatched individuals can form a meaningful connection through the unlikeliest of circumstances.
