Highlander is a fantasy action film released in 1986, directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Scottish swordsman who discovers he is part of a rare group of immortals. These immortals are destined to fight each other through the centuries until only one remains, with the ultimate goal of winning “The Prize,” a mysterious and powerful reward. The story shifts between the 16th century Scottish Highlands and 1980s New York City, blending historical drama with modern-day fantasy.
The film opens in New York during a wrestling match, where Connor finds himself drawn into a deadly duel in a parking garage. After defeating another immortal, he is arrested but quickly released due to lack of evidence. Flashbacks then begin to reveal his past life in 16th century Scotland, where he was mortally wounded in battle but miraculously survived. This leads his village to accuse him of witchcraft, and he is cast out.

Connor eventually meets another immortal, Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, played by Sean Connery, who becomes his mentor. Ramírez teaches him about the rules of immortality: they cannot die unless beheaded, they cannot fight on holy ground, and they are all drawn to each other to fight until only one remains. Ramírez warns Connor of a powerful and evil immortal, the Kurgan, who seeks to win The Prize for himself and bring destruction to the world.
As centuries pass, Connor lives under various identities, experiencing love, loss, and solitude. In the present day, he works as an antique dealer in New York while continuing to prepare for the final battles between the remaining immortals. Meanwhile, a forensic expert named Brenda Wyatt begins to investigate the mysterious murders involving ancient swords and becomes entangled in Connor’s secret world.

The tension builds as Connor faces off against the Kurgan, who has been ruthlessly eliminating other immortals. The final confrontation between the two takes place in an abandoned building, culminating in an epic sword fight. After defeating the Kurgan, Connor becomes the last surviving immortal and receives The Prize, gaining the ability to age, have children, and understand the thoughts and feelings of all living beings.
Highlander combines action, romance, and mythology in a unique and memorable way. Its themes of immortality, loneliness, and destiny give it emotional depth, while its iconic soundtrack by Queen and visually striking style have made it a cult classic. The film ends with Connor embracing his humanity, finally free from centuries of battle and burden.
