The Gorge opens with Levi Kane (Miles Teller), a highly trained U.S. Marine sniper, being recruited by a mysterious figure named Bartholomew to take up a one‑year post in a remote watchtower on the West side of an enormous, classified gorge. Levi must remain completely isolated, with minimal supplies and no contact with the outside world except occasional radio check‑ins. He relieves his predecessor, J.D. (Sope Dirisu), who warns him of the dangers: the gorge is cloaked with antennas, creatures called “The Hollow Men” are kept inside, and a protocol dubbed “Straydog” exists in case containment fails.
Across the gorge is Drasa (Anya Taylor‑Joy), a covert operative from Lithuania, assigned to guard the East tower. Drasa is burdened personally by her ill father, Erikas, who plans to end his life on a particular date. Both Levi and Drasa suffer internal struggles: Levi battles PTSD and nightmares, Drasa wrestles with guilt and the weight of her mission. Neither initially knows much of what they are truly defending against, but both sense that they’re part of something much larger and more secretive.
Despite strict rules forbidding communication, the two sentries begin to form a bond through indirect means—signs, binoculars, and eventually written messages. Loneliness, curiosity, and shared duty draw them together across the void. At one point Levi rigs a zip‑line to cross over; they meet, share a brief romantic interlude, but danger looms as the integrity of their posts and the mystery beneath the gorge become more urgent.
Their world changes when Levi, during a crossing, falls into the gorge after his zip‑line fails. Drasa, risking protocol, plunges in to rescue him. In the depths of the chasm they uncover horrifying truths: the source of the Hollow Men, a World War II‑era bioweapons lab, mutated by an earthquake‑caused contaminant leak. They learn Darklake, a private defense corporation, has been maintaining the facility, harvesting hybrid creatures, and hiding the real purpose of the gorge.
As they attempt to escape, Levi and Drasa decide they must disable the cloaking antennas, expose the secret base, and prevent the emergence of a catastrophe. They also learn that “Straydog” is a fail‑safe: a protocol that will trigger a nuclear sterilization of the site if containment is compromised. Bartholomew, revealed to be working for Darklake, orders Levi to kill Drasa. Instead, the two fight back—against the Hollow Men, drones, and the corporation’s forces. In a climactic sequence, they destroy the antennas, trigger Straydog (destroying much of the facility and killing Bartholomew and her team), and Drasa escapes to quarantine for five days to ensure she’s not infected. Levi is injured, but they reconvene in France, where Levi surprises Drasa after a time apart.
The film closes with their reunion. Though the gorge is destroyed and the threat seemingly neutralized, both are changed—deeply scarred, but alive. Their connection, forged under duress and isolation, becomes real. Rather than returning to ordinary life, they now carry the burden of knowing what lurks behind walls built to contain horrors. The final scene suggests hope: that even in the face of monstrous secrets and betrayal, trust and love can be survival tools.
