American Primeval

The first season of American Primeval leaves our characters at a precarious turning point, and in an imagined Season 2, the story could open with Sara, her son Devin, and Two Moons continuing their perilous westward trek toward California. With Isaac gone and Fort Bridger burned, the trio must navigate a landscape rife with new threats, from bounty hunters still on Sara’s trail to the growing tensions of the broader Civilizing West pushing into Native lands.

As they travel across increasingly lawless territories, the season would introduce new allies and adversaries—perhaps settlers, desperate soldiers, opportunistic traders, or tribes drawn into shifting alliances. Sara’s status as a fugitive for murder and robbery would remain a key motivator, compelling the group to remain vigilant, while also reflecting the larger conflict between individual survival and collective morality.

Meanwhile, Jim Bridger—after watching his Fort destroyed—might blaze new trails into uncharted lands, mirroring his historical achievements like the Bridger Trail or his role in Red Cloud’s War. His perspective could provide a parallel storyline, highlighting the harsh choices made by frontiersmen in a rapidly changing West.

On the political front, Brigham Young’s tenure as Utah Territory governor would be coming to an end, replaced soon after by a non-Mormon governor, while the federal government reasserts control. The repercussions of the Mountain Meadows Massacre would reverberate, with characters grappling with guilt, retribution, and the fragility of alliances.

However, there are significant hurdles to a traditional second season—many characters died, including Isaac, Devin and Two Moons have visibly aged due to production delays, and the series was originally conceived as a limited run—all of which make a direct continuation complicated.

Instead, the creators are more inclined toward crafting a prequel spin-off centered on Isaac Reed. This approach would explore his background—his upbringing among the Shoshone, his motivations, survival skills, relationships, and how he became the mysterious guide we meet in Season 1. Such a prequel bypasses aging issues, honors the show’s limited-series origins, and allows deeper world-building in a familiar yet untold era.

Ultimately, while there’s affection and storytelling potential left for Sara, Devin, Two Moons, and even Bridger, the practical and narrative constraints point producers toward a prequel rather than a full-blown Season 2. If Netflix gives the green light, we might expect this prequel to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027, considering the historical drama’s demands and production timeline
