THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE

The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) is a supernatural horror film directed by Diederik Van Rooijen. The story revolves around Megan Reed, a former police officer recovering from addiction and trauma, who takes a job as an overnight intake assistant at a hospital morgue. The job, while isolated, seems simple at first. However, things take a terrifying turn when the body of a young woman named Hannah Grace is brought in after a failed exorcism.

As Megan begins her shift, she notices strange occurrences around the morgue. The building itself is dark and eerie, with flickering lights, strange sounds, and a persistent sense of dread. Hannah’s corpse is severely burned and twisted, but still shows signs of unexplained movement. Surveillance cameras glitch, equipment malfunctions, and Megan starts to question her sanity.

The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) - Grave Reviews- Horror Reviews

Through flashbacks and subtle clues, the audience learns that Hannah Grace had been possessed by a powerful demon. During an exorcism performed by her father and two priests, the ritual fails, and Hannah dies in the process. Her death, however, does not mean the end of the possession. The demon appears to have remained within her body, feeding off death and growing stronger.

Megan’s mental state is already fragile due to her past trauma, which makes her an unreliable narrator at times. She begins seeing things others don’t—shadowy figures, moving corpses, and terrifying visions. Her co-workers and even her former partner think she’s imagining everything. But as the supernatural events intensify, Megan realizes that Hannah’s body is not just a corpse, but a vessel for something evil that cannot be killed in a traditional way.

The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018) - Movie Review : Alternate Ending

The film builds tension through isolation, sound design, and a claustrophobic setting. The morgue’s cold, sterile environment becomes a haunted space, and the film leans heavily on jump scares and atmospheric horror. The idea of evil surviving death adds a unique twist to the typical possession genre, shifting the horror from religious ritual to psychological survival.

In the end, Megan is forced to confront her fear and trauma in order to destroy the possessed corpse. The climax is intense and filled with suspense, as Megan fights both the demon and her inner demons. The film closes with an ambiguous ending, leaving viewers to question whether the horror is truly over. While The Possession of Hannah Grace received mixed reviews, it offers a chilling take on possession horror with a modern, clinical twist.
