Elf tells the story of Buddy, a human who grew up believing he was an elf after accidentally crawling into Santa’s toy sack as a baby. Raised at the North Pole among Santa’s cheerful helpers, Buddy stands out not only because of his size but also because of his boundless enthusiasm and innocent optimism. Although he tries his best to fit in, it becomes clear that he struggles with tasks that regular elves handle easily. Eventually, Papa Elf gently explains the truth about Buddy’s origins, revealing that his real father lives in New York City and has no idea Buddy exists.
Shaken but excited, Buddy decides to travel to New York to find his father. His journey is filled with wonder, confusion, and a few hilarious misunderstandings as he encounters a world that looks nothing like the North Pole. When he finally meets his father, Walter Hobbs, Buddy discovers that Walter is a cynical, work-obsessed businessman who has landed himself on Santa’s “naughty list.” Walter refuses to believe Buddy is his son, brushing him off as a delusional stranger, which leaves Buddy heartbroken but determined to win his father’s affection.
Buddy begins exploring the city, finding joy in even the most ordinary things. He lands a job at a department store, where his unfiltered cheerfulness surprises customers and frustrates employees. There, he meets Jovie, a kind but weary young woman who is charmed by Buddy’s sincere personality. Their growing friendship brings warmth to Buddy’s otherwise overwhelming introduction to human life, and Jovie slowly begins to rediscover the magic of Christmas through his eyes.
Meanwhile, Walter struggles with the chaos Buddy unintentionally brings into his life. His wife and young son, however, immediately embrace Buddy, appreciating the innocence and warmth he brings to their home. Through Buddy’s presence, the family begins to reconnect, realizing how much they had drifted apart in the rush of everyday responsibilities. Walter, still reluctant, tries to balance his demanding job with the sudden arrival of his overly enthusiastic adult son.
The story intensifies when Buddy’s attempt to help at work leads to a series of miscommunications that push Walter past his limit. Feeling rejected, Buddy wanders the city alone, questioning whether he belongs anywhere. But everything changes when Santa’s sleigh crashes in Central Park due to a lack of Christmas spirit. Buddy steps in to repair the sleigh while Jovie rallies the crowd to believe again, creating one of the film’s most heartwarming moments.
In the end, Walter realizes what truly matters and finally accepts Buddy as part of the family. The city’s renewed Christmas spirit saves Santa’s sleigh, and Buddy finds where he truly belongs—not at the North Pole or New York alone, but with the people who love him.
