Three years after her first great voyage, Moana returns home to the island of Motunui with new knowledge of the sea and a renewed sense of purpose. It captures the majesty of the sea while also reminding us of its perils. However, some critiques have pointed out that while the animation dazzles, the narrative lacks the emotional depth and musical magic of the original film. The villain’s motivations are less developed, and several new characters feel under-explored.
Yet the heart of the story remains Moana’s internal journey. She wrestles with her identity, stepping out of the shadow of her ancestors, and learning that her way-finding is not just about navigating seas, but nourishing relationships and preserving culture.
