The Emoji Movie is a 2017 animated film directed by Tony Leondis that takes place inside a teenager’s smartphone, where emojis come to life in the digital city of Textopolis. The story follows Gene, a young emoji who is supposed to represent only one expression—“meh.” However, unlike other emojis, Gene is different because he can show multiple emotions. In a world where everyone must stay true to their assigned expression, Gene’s uniqueness causes problems and makes him feel like he doesn’t belong.
At the start of the movie, Gene’s dream is to become a normal “meh” emoji like his parents, Mel and Mary. He finally gets a chance to work in the phone’s text center, but when his first assignment goes wrong, he accidentally sends the wrong facial expression to his user, a teenage boy named Alex. The mistake causes chaos in Textopolis, and Gene is blamed for ruining the system. Fearing deletion, Gene runs away and begins a journey to find a way to fix himself and become “normal.”

Along the way, Gene meets Hi-5, a once-popular hand emoji who has lost his status, and Jailbreak, a clever hacker emoji with a mysterious past. Together, they travel through different apps on the phone—such as Candy Crush, Just Dance, and Dropbox—in search of a code that can make Gene a standard emoji. Each app presents its own challenges, from dangerous antivirus bots to system crashes, creating a colorful and adventurous digital world.
As the trio explores the phone, Gene learns that being different is not something to hide. Jailbreak reveals that she once tried to break free from the limits placed on female emojis, inspiring Gene to accept his individuality. Meanwhile, in the real world, Alex’s phone starts malfunctioning because of the chaos inside, leading him to decide to erase all data—including the emojis themselves.

In a race against time, Gene and his friends work together to save the phone and prove that uniqueness is valuable. Gene uses his ability to express multiple emotions to send a perfect message to Alex’s crush, saving both the phone and their world.
The Emoji Movie delivers a fun and colorful adventure with a simple but meaningful message: being different is what makes each person special. Despite taking place in a digital world, the film reminds audiences of the importance of self-acceptance, friendship, and staying true to who you are.
