The film opens in war-torn Iraq, where an oil-refinery owned by the Chinese company Unicorp is under constant attack from mercenaries led by the ruthless Owen Paddock. Into this volatile situation steps the Chinese private-security firm led by veteran “Dragon” Luo Feng, portrayed by Jackie Chan, whose mission is to evacuate civilian employees—including families and children—from the refinery and transport them through the perilous “Highway of Death” to the safety of the Green Zone. Meanwhile, former US Marine Chris Van Horne (played by John Cena) finds himself drawn into the mercenary side of the conflict. After agreeing to join his brother’s rogue mission in pursuit of money to restore water to his drought-stricken village, Chris becomes entangled in the violent web of oil, power, and revenge.
As the convoy sets off, the film quickly ratchets up the tension. The bus convoy, carrying nearly 500 civilians, is ambushed when Paddock’s mercenaries generate a massive artificial sandstorm to cover their attacks, hijack buses, and kidnap key hostages including Professor Chang and her son. With the codes to the refinery in play and the mission of evacuation becoming a race for survival, Luo Feng and Chris’s paths crash into one another. Initially on opposite sides, the two men discover a shared enemy in Owen and gradually form an uneasy alliance. This unlikely partnership becomes the engine of the story’s second act.

Beyond the action-set-pieces, the film layers in personal stakes. Feng is estranged from his daughter Mei due to past sacrifices he made in the name of duty, and Mei resents that her father was absent during her mother’s death. Meanwhile, Chris grapples with guilt, loss and the moral ambiguity of his mercenary work. Their joint fight becomes not just about oil or hostages, but about redemption, trust and protecting innocents caught in the crossfire. The desert setting, sweeping convoy scenes, and explosive sequences deliver on the promise of a high-stakes action adventure, even as critics pointed out flaws in the storytelling and CGI.

In the climactic sequence, Feng, Chris and Mei storm the refinery and its convoy of tankers. A massive chain reaction of exploding fuel trucks and high-speed desert vehicle chases culminate in Owen’s defeat as his ATV skids off a cliff while Feng’s team neutralizes the tanker threat. After the dust settles, the hostages are freed, the village’s water well is repaired, and Feng offers Chris a new mission—hinting at further adventures—while Mei reconciles with her father.
Overall, Hidden Strike packs in the star power of Jackie Chan and John Cena, an exotic warzone setting, and fast-paced action across desert landscapes and high-tech threats. While critics judged the script as “by-the-numbers” and the chemistry between leads as lacking, many viewers found the spectacle and stunts entertaining enough to make the movie worth a look.
