Ron Masak

Ron Masak’s career stands as a testament to perseverance, versatility, and the quiet power of a character actor. Born in Chicago in 1936, Masak began his journey in the theatre, tackling demanding roles such as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and Antony in Julius Caesar.  These early theatre credits laid the foundation for a long and steady career in television and film, one not defined by leading‑star glamour, but by steady presence and dependable craft.

Yet it is his recurring role as Sheriff Mort Metzger on the long‑running television drama Murder, She Wrote that brought him to a broader public consciousness. From mid‑1980s through the show’s end in 1996, Masak appeared in over 40 episodes as Metzger.  His character served as the steady law‑enforcement presence in the fictional Cabot Cove, alongside the series’ main protagonist. What makes this role interesting is that though Metzger never overshadowed the star of the show, he embodied a reliable — almost comfortable — supporting pillar.

Masak’s on‑screen persona conveyed a friendly, trustworthy authority. As Metzger he never seemed brooding or overly dramatic — instead he offered calm competence, often aiding the central character and reinforcing the tone of the show.
