LOVE ACTUALLY 2 Official Trailer

The sequel Love Actually 2, more of a short special than a full movie, takes place roughly fourteen years after the events of the original 2003 film.  Much of the original ensemble cast returns, including Hugh Grant as David, Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Juliet and Peter, Liam Neeson as Daniel, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Sam, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, Rowan Atkinson, Colin Firth, Lucia Moniz, and Martine McCutcheon.  One major absence is Emma Thompson, whose character is not included in the sequel because her husband in the original film, played by Alan Rickman, has passed away.

In this update, we catch up with Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurélia (Lucia Moniz) who are still married and living their life together. Their relationship has grown; they now have three children, and Aurélia is revealed to be pregnant with their fourth. Jamies’s Portuguese remains imperfect, and there’s some humorous trouble understanding what Aurélia is saying – familiar territory for this couple. Meanwhile, Daniel (Liam Neeson) reconnects with his now‑adult stepson Sam (Thomas Brodie‑Sangster). Sam, who has been living in New York, has drifted out of touch. When they meet, Sam reveals that he has rekindled a childhood friendship or crush with Joanna (Olivia Olson), who then asks Daniel for his permission to propose.

David (Hugh Grant) is once again Prime Minister, and Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) is still by his side. We see David dancing again in his Downing Street office, this time to Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” and he’s still making public speeches about hope, love, and resilience — especially relevant considering the “hard times” many people have been going through.  Another returning character is Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), who has released another charity single and talks about how he did it for Red Nose Day; though publicly he bears his usual brash humor, there’s a softer side in his motivations.

A familiar moment involves Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) watching TV together, when Mark (Andrew Lincoln) appears at Juliet’s door with his famous cue cards, pretending to be fundraising for Red Nose Day. It’s a nostalgic callback to the scene from the original film.  The short special doesn’t try to resolve every storyline in depth — its goal is more to revisit characters, offer small updates, and evoke the warmth and bittersweet sense of time passed that fans of Love Actually would recognize.

Ultimately, Love Actually 2 delivers a message in line with the spirit of the original: despite the years, despite the changes, love still matters. Whether it’s in family, friendship, politics, or forgiveness, characters are shown growing, showing resilience, and caring for one another. The Red Nose Day special ends with David giving a public speech reminding viewers that in times of tragedy there is also bravery — and that “the good” will prevail.
