After the devastating and morally complex events of Part II, Part III opens several years later in a somewhat fragile peace in Jackson. Ellie is trying to live with the consequences of her choices, especially the losses she’s suffered, and she’s growing more isolated. The fungal-infection threat remains, but fragments of society are trying to rebuild—small communities, trade, and fragile alliances. As supplies dwindle and the scars of past betrayals linger, whispers of a resurgence of the Fireflies begin. Ellie hears rumors that the Fireflies may have regrouped, seeking to restore their original mission: to find a cure using immune people like her.
Meanwhile, Abby, having departed Seattle after the events of Part II, is journeying with Lev. They have discovered that some Firefly outposts still exist, though scattered and weakened. Abby wrestles with guilt, redemption, and whether her role can ever be more than what she did in the past. She and Lev face hostility from both remnants of the WLF (Washington Liberation Front) and other survivor groups who distrust anything to do with Fireflies or what they represent.
Ellie and Abby’s paths begin to converge when a new threat emerges: a well-armed scavenger militia, led by a charismatic but ruthless leader named Val, seizes control over a region that holds one of the few known labs capable of continuing medical research. Val’s followers include Mason, Ezra, Lucas, and Gracie—each with different motivations. Mason is a former soldier, bitter and disciplined; Ezra is ambitious and power-hungry; Lucas is compassionate; and Gracie, young and idealistic, provides a contrast to the hardened survivors around her. Their conflict over control of that lab becomes a flashpoint.
As Ellie learns of Val’s plans—plans that could lead to curing many but at the cost of sacrificing the autonomy or safety of others—she is torn between helping them and ensuring that no group gains tyrannical power in the process. Abby, driven by her wish to atone and protect Lev, becomes involved too, seeing that the lab represents both hope and danger. The narrative builds tension through betrayals, moral dilemmas, and violent encounters: groups clash, infected outbreaks threaten community strongholds, and Ellie’s impaired physical condition complicates her ability to contribute as she once did.
In the climactic arc, Val attempts to force the lab’s director to run dangerous, untested trials in order to accelerate a cure. Ellie, Abby, and Lev lead a coalition of survivors to stop Val, protect the vulnerable, and try to bring the research under more ethical oversight. The final standoff happens during an infected swarm attack, which Val has inadvertently drawn toward the lab. Lives are lost, alliances are broken, and Abby must make a sacrifice to prevent Val’s plan from destroying the lab and innocent people.
The resolution is bittersweet: the lab is saved, but not without cost. Ellie helps set up a more democratic council to oversee medical research; Abby, having sacrificed much, retreats to help Lev build a safe community elsewhere. Ellie is left to reflect on what peace means in a world where trust is fragile, hope is always under threat, and every cure comes with a moral price. The game ends with Ellie standing outside the lab at dawn, the lab’s doors opening as survivors enter—symbolizing both a new beginning and the understanding that the cycle of suffering, sacrifice, and survival never fully ends.
