American Dragon: Jake Long is an animated action‑adventure series that follows the life of Jake Long, a Chinese‑American teenager living in Manhattan who has a secret destiny: he is part of a long line of dragons and has the power to shapeshift into a powerful dragon. Jake must balance normal adolescent concerns with his duties as protector of the magical creatures living secretly among humans.
Jake lives with his family, including his mother Susan (whose generation skipped dragon powers), his younger sister Haley (who also has dragon abilities), his father Jonathan who is unaware of the dragon side of the family, and his grandfather Lao Shi, a wise master of dragons who trains Jake in mystical abilities. Fu Dog, a 600‑year‑old magical talking Shar‑Pei, serves as Jake’s animal guardian as well as a mentor.

In his ordinary life, Jake hangs out with his two close friends, Trixie Carter and Arthur P. “Spud” Spudinski, goes to middle school, deals with schoolwork, crushes, and everyday teenage difficulties. But once Jake transforms into his dragon form, he must protect magical beings—such as unicorns, mermaids, and leprechauns—that are hidden among the city, all while keeping their existence secret from most humans.
One of Jake’s biggest challenges is his schoolmate Rose, who looks like a normal person but secretly is the Huntsgirl, a member of the Huntsclan, a clan of dragon‑slayers. She has been raised by the Huntsman to hunt magical creatures, including dragons. Jake has a crush on Rose, which makes things complicated: his feelings conflict with her secret identity and opposing mission.

Jake’s powers include fire breathing, flight, sharp claws, a prehensile tail, enhanced senses, shape-shifting, and sometimes transformations that test him both physically and morally. His grandfather Lao Shi trains him to master these powers responsibly, in accord with dragon rules—particularly the rule that dragons must not let humans discover the magical world or use dragon powers for selfish gain.
Throughout the series, Jake grows from a somewhat reckless, show‑off teenager into someone more mature, more aware of the sacrifices involved in doing what is right. He learns about responsibility, identity, trust (especially in friendships and family), and what it means to be human and dragon at the same time. The show combines humor, magic, family dynamics, action, romance, and fantasy to explore how someone handles a double life.
