Season 4 of Dark Winds has officially been green‑lit by AMC, with production starting in March 2025 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The show will continue with eight hour‑long episodes, matching the expanded format used in Season 3 rather than the shorter run of Seasons 1 and 2.  Zahn McClarnon, who plays Lt. Joe Leaphorn, will make his directorial debut in this upcoming season.

In terms of cast, many of the regulars are expected to return: Zahn McClarnon (as Joe Leaphorn), Kiowa Gordon (as Jim Chee), Jessica Matten (as Bernadette Manuelito), and Deanna Allison among others. New additions include Chaske Spencer, who joins the cast as “Sonny,” a recruiter for a Los Angeles crime ring — someone described as charismatic and lethal, whose modus operandi involves drawing young Native American men away from reservation life into criminal underworlds.  Also, Franka Potente is set to appear in a key guest role, though details about her character remain under wraps.

While the exact plot of Season 4 has not been publicly disclosed in detail, there are strong hints about its direction. Given how Season 3 dealt with disappearance of two boys (with only an abandoned bicycle and blood‑stained ground as clues) and growing conspiracy and crime elements, Season 4 is likely to deepen themes of exploitation, identity, and the tension between traditional Navajo life and external pressures.  The addition of Sonny suggests the storyline may explore more about urban entanglements and the ways in which reservation youth are targeted by crime networks beyond their land.

Also significant is Zahn McClarnon’s role as director, which may shift the tone or offer fresh creative perspectives, especially since he has lived and breathed the character of Joe Leaphorn for several seasons. There’s also expectation that the photography, cultural authenticity, and moral complexity that have been strengths of the series will be more pronounced.

As for release timing, AMC has confirmed Season 4 will air in 2026 on AMC and AMC+. Between the renewal announcement, casting updates, and the expanded episode count, Dark Winds Season 4 looks set to build on the momentum and acclaim of earlier seasons, promising more intense conflicts, richer character dynamics, and perhaps a broader canvas that links reservation life with larger criminal and spiritual threats.
