Weapons

The horror film Weapons (2025), directed and written by Zach Cregger, plunges audiences into a small Pennsylvania town gripped by the inexplicable disappearance of seventeen children from a single third-grade class at precisely 2:17 a.m., leaving only one boy, Alex, behind. As panic and suspicion spread, the film unfolds through multiple character perspectives, weaving a tense mosaic of fear, grief, and supernatural dread.

Justine Gandy, the children’s teacher portrayed by Julia Garner, becomes a focal point of the community’s suspicion and ostracism after the incident. She battles her own trauma and despair, slipping into alcoholism and even entering a forbidden affair with her ex-boyfriend, the officer Paul. Meanwhile, the grief-stricken parent Archer Graff, played by Josh Brolin, launches his own investigation in frustration with the slow police response, steering the audience deeper into the mystery.

What sets Weapons apart is its innovative narrative structure, using six (or more) overlapping viewpoints—from the teacher, the father, the principal, a police officer, a burglar, among others—to gradually uncover the truth behind the vanishings. Instead of relying on cheap scares, the film builds dread with atmospheric cinematography, well-placed stillness, and subtle pacing that ratchets tension to breaking point.

The supernatural element emerges in the form of Gladys, Alex’s aunt—revealed to be a dying witch who uses dark enchantments involving personal items, hair, and thorny branches to control others and draw the children into a basement to feed on their life force . Her spells transform townspeople into literal weapons, compelling them to enact horrifying violence on her behalf—turning the innocent into instruments of destruction. Ultimately, the children break free, using the very magic intended to control them to destroy Gladys, though the trauma they endured leaves lasting scars.

Weapons (2025) Review - Future of the Force

Critics have heaped praise on Weapons for its originality and emotional depth. Garner’s performance is lauded for its complexity, while Brolin’s portrayal of a desperate father strikes a devastating emotional chord. The film holds a remarkable high score—94% on Rotten Tomatoes—highlighting its success as a visually arresting, genre-bending thriller that blends horror with mystery and dark humor .

In the end, Weapons is far more than a standard horror flick. It’s a slow-burning, psychologically layered tale that uses its fragmented, multiperspectival structure to explore themes of grief, suspicion, and the will to survive amid collective trauma. With its haunting visuals, inventive storytelling, and memorable performances, Cregger crafts a film that’s as intellectually satisfying as it is viscerally unsettling.
